For radio DJ and comedian Tafadzwa Shugeta Ben, depression has always hounded him for a well despite hiding it behind a smile and all those funny skits to an extent of getting close to suicide.
The National FM radio presenter revealed his predicament on Facebook in a post seen by Harare Live.
For the man who has fans all over Zimbabwe and elsewhere, one wouldn’t dream how devastating depression really is and how much it affects one’s mental health. It took bravery on Shugeta’s part to come out and share with his fans and family.
His message reads;
Good morning family.Sorry kune vachabatikana with this message but I think it’s time I let you all know , im not okay and ndaane nguva yakati rebei now ndisiri fine .
I have some serious things going on in my life right now and the sad part is im losing it everyday .Suicidal thoughts ,anxiety , all that .For a long time now I been putting on a happy mask but deep down im emotionally and mentally exhausted….im dying .
Thus I feel i just wanna get away from everyone and everything for a moment asi kana ndaabho muchandiona ndichidzoka .I need a break from my heart ,my brain ,my lyf i need to go away for just a little while.But remember this isn’t a goodbye forever , i don’t know when i will be back but i hope i will be back soon rejuvenated ndave Shugeta chaiye wenyu wamunoda .Musandikanganwewo in your prayers .
Nothing in nature blooms all year n a break is sometimes what’s needed to figure everything out.
Since coming out in the open and deciding to take a break for time to reflect, Shugeta has received an outpouring of love and support from friends and family which prompted him to respond positively as he realises he is not alone in his situation.

I thank you for the outpour of love and compassion over my predicament. My condition is a very intimate and personal struggle which is hard to understand if you are not in that situation. I therefore appreciate the concern and care l am receiving from all corners of the world, even from people l never knew would care because they have also been in the same situation. It is time we become comfortable talking about depression as an open subject because it is one of our greatest killers. I will be going live to let you in on my story here on this channel as well as Mukoma Kapfupi ‘s page at exctly 12 this afternoon and i hope to meet other people in my situation so that we can exchange notes on coping mechanisms.
