DJ Maphorisa in trouble with “maphorisa” after neighbours snitched on him over coronavirus

Amapiano king DJ Maphorisa’s neighbours have unleashed “maphorisa” on him for allegedly breaking Covid-19 regulations in his residential complex.

Sunday World can reveal that police descended on Maphorisa’s posh house in Breakfree residential complex in Midrand, over the past weekend after its homeowners association (HOA) complained that Maphorisa was violating regulations implemented in the complex to curb the spread of the highly contagious disease which, as of Friday, had infected 1 505 South Africans.

News that Maphorisa was wreaking havoc in the complex came to the fore when an HOA member wrote a letter of complaint to owners.

The letter, a copy of which is in the possession of Sunday World, reads: “Dear Breakfree Residents, we have a serious problem in the Estate with the owner of unit 98, DJ Maphorisa. As the HOA, we are not happy with his behaviour.

1. We issued a letter that no visitors will be allowed into the estate but he is bringing people into the estate. He drives out and comes back with people.

2. The noise levels from his house are unacceptable and he is really disturbing the peace of the people living around him.

It reads further: “We have approached him as the HOA, and he is ignoring our instructions. We tried to get SAPS involved. They cannot help us as this is his private residence and there is not over 50 people gathering.

“He is contravening the rules of the Covid-19 and putting the lives of everyone in the estate in jeopardy because it is said that this virus is airborne.

“We need all hands on deck to stop this madness.”

An HOA member, who did not want to be named for fear of victimisation, said they had drafted the complex regulations, including a ban on visitors, after the outbreak of Covid-19.

He said Maphorisa cocked a snook at these regulations and brought in several people into the complex last Saturday.

“When we tried to speak to him, he told us that he had to work so that he could pay his bills. He has a studio in the complex and his visitors come here to make music, thus putting our health at risk because we don’t know if they are Covid-19 positive or not,” said the resident.

The resident said they had called the police on Saturday, but they left when Maphorisa told them he had not broken the law because he had brought in fewer than 50 people into the complex. He said the police returned to the complex the next day after the muso violated the regulations by bringing in some more visitors.

The resident added that they contacted security guards and police on Monday when Maphorisa violated the rules again. “We are appealing to the artists not to honour his request to come and work here for the sake of our and their safety. As we make sacrifices, they too must make sacrifices by restricting movements. Either that or we will go to court to have his studio equipment confiscated.”

Gauteng police spokesman Vish Naidoo confirmed that they were called to the complex to intervene but could not gain access as the security guards blocked them.
