Crazy School Fees That Some Parents Are Paying In Zimbabwe
Schools officially opened for the first term of 2020 on Tuesday and a lot of parents have been stressed out trying to get everything their children need due to the ever-increasing prices.
Many parents have registered their frustration at how much school fees and school uniforms have been galloping, well ahead of their earnings.
While some parents are complaining about school fees which in most cases is below $1000, other parents have just paid a massive $106 000 as school fees for the entire first term.
Perhaps the gap between the rich and the poor is getting wider. To put this into perspective, Zimbabweans civil servants are currently earning an average of $1 500 per month and recently turned down a salary increase which would have seen this figure going up to $2 033 per month.
The $106 000 school fees for Riverton Academy translates to a whopping US$6 235 per term on the government’s official interbank foreign exchange market. However, on the black market, this translates to approximately US$4 600 per term. A princely sum indeed, this side of the world.
To be fair, however, Riverton Academy caters to the well-heeled of Zimbabwe. Last year, a prominent lawyer and businessman Farai Mutamangira caused a stir when he showed up to visit his children at the elite private school in a helicopter.
While he was not the first to do, using a helicopter to visit children at schools happens infrequently enough in Zimbabwe that it still turns heads.
