COVID-19 cases in South Africa closing in on the 35,000 mark

COVID-19 cases in the country are nearing 35,000. South Africa has now recorded 705 deaths and 34,357 cases from the virus. The Western Cape accounts for more than 65 per cent of cases with over 22,000 infections. The province also has the highest death toll at 525. Testing is continuing with 740,000 tests conducted. Over 17,000 people have recovered.

Meanwhile, medical experts warned South Africans to expect huge increases in coronavirus cases as the country entered lockdown Level 3 on Monday. Last week, several experts met to discuss health interventions ahead of this lockdown downgrade.
South African epidemiologist and infectious diseases specialist, Professor Salim Abdool Karim, said the outbreak may peak in different provinces at different times.
