Court orders Chamisa to pay back $1.8 million to Khupe
The High Court has ordered MDC Alliance presidential candidate, Nelson Chamisa to pay back $1.8 million to MDC-T Khupe which he received from Government on behalf of the MDC-T party in March this year.
This follows Chamisa’s withdrawal of a court case in which he was fighting his now rival Dr Thokozani Khupe, over the use of the name and symbols of the “MDC-T”.
High Court Judge, Justice Dube ruled that since Dr Khupe was the official leader of the MDC-T, Chamisa should return the money he received on behalf of that party from Government within 7 days.
The MDC-T was given $1.8 million under the Political Parties Finances Act, which has reportedly since been spent by Chamisa as his faction is allegedly broke and begging supporters to make donations via Ecocash.
The MDC Alliance , is reportedly facing more woes as donor-funded local CSOs that usually chipped in, aiding the opposition’s campaigns recently had their funds cut after the United States government discovered that they were misusing the funds for political purposes.
When contacted for comment, Chamisa’s Spokesperson, Dr Nkululeko Sibanda, scoffed at the ruling and said their supporters were capable of raising the required amount.
“This biased ruling will not deter us. We are the biggest movement in the country and it will only take one day for our supporters to give us the money we need. After all, it is just money, what’s $1.8 million , who cares?”, he said.
