COOKING OIL SHORTAGES CRISIS | It never rains but it pours when it comes to the economic situation in Zimbabwe. Hot on the heels of a basic goods price hike, consumers in the country were hit with yet another crisis. Cooking oil has suddenly become scarce overnight in Harare.
The cooking oil situation has become so dire that consumers are now scrambling from retail store to retail store in order to find cooking oil supplies. While details are still sketchy as to this overnight scarcity of the precious oil, many believe that the sudden price hike is responsible for this misfortune.
According to some sources, the retail shops have decided to hoard the basic commodity in order to return it on the shelves with a slightly inflated price. Some are accrediting to consumers who were warned in time about the pending price hike and decided to hoard the oil for themselves to save it for a rainy day.
As per norm in this country, opportunists were waiting in the wings to capitalize on the crisis. Street vendors had already grabbed cartons of oil from the shops before the disaster struck and they’re now reselling the cooking oil with a higher price.
The shelves in supermarkets have been cleaned dry of all remnants of cooking oil and desperate consumers have already turned to the black market in their hour of need.In order to control the situation, some shops have introduced the ‘1 bottle per person’ policy so everyone can benefit.
The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe as well the suppliers haven’t released an official statement yet on the situation.
