City won’t block Chitembwe

HARARE City will not stand in coach Lloyd Chitembwe’s way should he tender his resignation letter following revelations he was finalising a reunion with CAPS United.

Chitembwe yesterday trained the Sunshine Boys amid reports his fresh deal with the Green Machine was being finalised.

The Harare giants parted ways with Darlington Dodo and his entire backroom staff, on Tuesday.

The backroom staff included Joseph “Shabba’’ Takaringofa, Taku Shariwa, team manager Shakespeare Chinogwenya and goalkeepers’ coach Witness Mnkuli.

The club have been preparing for the start of the new Premiership season under the guidance of their former juniors’ coach, Tonderai Marume.

CAPS United are set to announce the return of Chitembwe as coach before their opening Castle Lager Premiership match against ZPC Kariba, at Nyamhunga on Saturday.

The Herald is reliably informed Makepekepe have almost finalised the deal with the coach.

Chitembwe won three league titles with the Green Machine, as a player, and returned to lead the club to glory, as a coach, in 2016.

He is the most decorated club son in terms of league championships.

Sources at Harare City said the executive will not stand in the coach’s way and were ready to clear him if he wants to rejoin Makepekepe. Chitembwe signed a two-and-half year contract in August 2019.

The contract is set to expire in a few months’ time.

He is one of the three coaches short-listed for the CAPS United job following the sacking of Dodo.

Chitembwe dumped the Green Machine in August 2019, when he was offered a very good offer, at Harare City.

He is likely to return with his backroom staff, which also crossed the floor with him, to join the Sunshine Boys.

Fungai “Toastao’’ Kwashi and Nelson Matongorere are both likely to return to the Green Machine. Chitembwe could fish from those who remained at the club with Chinogwenya, a favourite of successive leaderships at the Green Machine, set to retain his role as team manager.

The junir coaches, who include former CAPS United star forward, Stewart Murisa, could also survive the changes.

Harare City are facing financial challenges and things are no longer as rosy at the club as was the case when Chitembwe arrived.

Makepekepe were also interested in Triangle coach, Taurai Mangwiro.

But, the former teacher, is still contracted at the Lowveld club where he believes he still has some unfinished business.
