Chinamasa’s Daughter Fingered In Chivayo $5m ZESA Scandal
Former Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa’s daughter Kangai has been named as one of the people who benefitted from the $5 million which was advanced to controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
The money was advanced by ZESA subsidiary Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) in irregular circumstances for the construction of the multi-million dollar Gwanda solar project.
During Chivayo’s fraud trial, the court heard that after receiving the $5 million advance, Chivayo deposited the $684 150 into five Visa account cards.
The cards belonged to Chivayo himself, his company Intratek Zimbabwe, Kangai Chinamasa and one Tinashe Chavi. Some of the money was also sent to individuals and companies who are not involved in the Gwanda Solar Project.
The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy discovered only two cabins as well as an incomplete perimeter fence when it toured the site of Gwanda Solar Power Project in February to check on the progress that has been made since the $200 million project was awarded.
However, the trial failed to start after Chivayo filed an exception to the charges arguing that the matter was a civil dispute which should not be entertained in a criminal court.
The outspoken businessman told the court that his was a simple case of breach of contract. Magistrate Lazini Ncube postponed the case to the 15th of November for his ruling.
