CHICKEN FEED IN SOYA CHUNKS
…Massive food industry scam busted
A CHITUNGWIZA company is allegedly using the chicken feed to make soya chunks for human consumption.
The syndicate has since been busted amid fears that the market could be flooded with chunks made from chicken feed.
The soya chunks were allegedly packed and distributed by Jestic foods a company in Chitungwiza.
A syndicate of smuggled meat, sex enhancing energy drink as well as a mixture of soya and expired meat cuttings popularly known as Makanyanisi has also been busted in a police blitz.
The 3 000kg chicken feed imported from Zambia, 27 tonnes of Revin energy drink and 1.2 tonnes of smuggled meat have since been taken by police as evidence.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the developments and said police intercepted over 3000kg of chicken feed that was being used by the company in Chitungwiza to make soya chunks which they would sell to unsuspecting customers.
“Police have seized over 3 000 kg of chicken feed that was being used by a Chitungwiza based company to make soya chunks and then sell it to unsuspecting customers.
“It’s a very sad situation that food that is meant for chicken was used to prepare soya chunks for human consumption and the other soya chunks that the company made was sold to people who rear pigs,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
He said that the police also seized 2 400 packs of Makanyanisi which expired in 2017 but the expiry date was reprinted to December 2019.
“The Makanyanisi expired in 2017 and the expiry date was reprinted to December 2019.
“There is no information on the Makanyanisi about who the manufacturer is, that is the reason we seized them because they were suspicious,” said Ass Com Nyathi.
Ass Comm Nyathi said the police also intercepted more than 20 tonnes of Revin, an energy drink that is being smuggled into the country.
“Revin is very dangerous to human consumption and some countries have banned it from being sold in their countries.
“The energy drink Revin which is being smuggled into the country from Zambia is dangerous and has got side effects if consumed.”
Ass Comm Nyathi warned companies and individuals that they will pounce on them if they smuggle into the country any substances that are dangerous to human consumption.
He added that those who are caught smuggling goods into the country would be apprehended.
Ass Comm Nyathi said the police have arrested people in connection with the smuggled goods, and he said they will be taken to court once they have finished investigations.
“We are not leaving any stone unturned; we are carrying investigations on the company in Chitungwiza to unravel what they did with the money they got from selling soya chunks made using chicken feed.
“We want to recover the money which should be forfeited to State as it was gained using devious means,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
He confirmed the force has intercepted more than 27 tonnes of Revin, 2 400 packs of expired Makanyanisi and 1, 2 tonnes of meat smuggled into the country.
Sixty-three boxes of 100ml BronCleer being taken to one Rudo Demba and others were also seized in the blitz.
The consignments of the 1, 2 tonnes of meat were coming from France, South Africa, Brazil and Argentina.
The meat comprised of chicken heads, chicken feet, beef livers, chicken breasts and Russian sausages.
One Mai Sadombo had beef liver weighing 19,215kg produced by Socopa Viandes a company based in France.
There was also 20kg of chicken heads and feet, 10 kg of Russian sausage from South Africa, 11, 28 kg of beef liver from USA and 12 kg of chicken breasts from Brazil and meant for a person identified as Kachemwa.
