Department of Immigration staffers demonstrated Friday at the department’s main offices in the capital against the three senior managers they accused of se_xual harassment and corruption.

Security personnel at the building locked the pedestrian gate along Herbert Chitepo to stop the demonstrating workers from entering the premises.

Principal Director Givemore Charamba, husband to ZRP national spokesperson Charity Charamba, Steven Museki (director administration) and Clemence Masango (principal director) — were accused of se_xually harassing female employees, corruption and unfair labour practices.

Spokesperson for the workers, Nkosana Mtunzi, said they had exhausted all possible avenues to have the issue resolved but had found no joy.

He said they were now demanding the intervention of Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu to suspend the permanent secretary Mesui Matshiya, who they accused of protecting the accused directors.

Matshiya’s suspension would facilitate investigations, adding that an independent commission with unfettered powers should be set up to look into the grievances raised by the workers.

“We are also demanding a review of all disciplinary cases of employees that were handled by the three directors since their employment,” said Mtunzi.

The protestors want a meeting with minister Mpofu to reveal details of the corruption, unfair labour practices and se_xual harassment cases taking place in the department.

Mtunzi said earlier efforts to engage management over the matter had met with stiff resistance and accused officials of conniving to sweep the issues under the carpet.

Earlier this year, the workers took the matter to Parliament, but the department’s management led by Immigration Principal Director Clemence Masango refused to testify before the MPs’ portfolio committee on Labour and Social Welfare chaired by Magna Mudyiwa.

Legislators are expected to debate a motion which seeks to admonish Masango for refusing to testify before the committee.
