MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has hit out at President Emmerson Mnangagwa over attempts to secure ties with the former through a tweet while turning down physical opposition overtures towards dialogue.

Rejecting poll results a threat to democracy

The opposition leader, who continues to reject Mnangagwa’s controversial victory in the just ended elections, was speaking to the media in Harare weekend.

Mnangagwa on Friday posted on twitter saying his arms were “over-stretched” to his rival.

This was after the Constitutional Court had upheld his disputed victory from the July 30 elections.

But Chamisa insists Mnangagwa was not sincere in his attempts to reach out to him.

“We wrote to ED before the election to have a political dialogue and he has not yet responded. The earliest response I got from President Mnangagwa is a tweet which I am not sure is it’s his twitter handle, and the tweet said, ‘my arms are open for Chamisa’. I don’t know which arms.

“So, I don’t want to end up being embarrassed instead of being embraced by arms that I do not know.”

Chamisa said Mnangagwa should first address issues to do with his disputed legitimacy before he could start thinking of any plans to forge alliances with the opposition.

“I requested to have a meeting. He has not yet responded. And the meeting is not to discuss anything but to discuss legitimacy issues and to discuss all the disputed issues around free and fair elections so that the country is able to move forward.

“There has to be dialogue, working together. This is why we wrote to SADC and we did not get a response from them and the AU. I hope (South African) President Ramaphosa will also respond.

“Zimbabwe needs dialogue and let the dialogue be on legitimacy, rule of law and dialogue on observing human rights. Our people are being subjected to abuse, senior politicians being dragged to court.”

The alliance leader said the newly elected President should not attempt to play the mercy card when he knew he (Chamisa) won the election.

“You can’t rob me of my goats then you come and say let’s share those goats,” he said, adding, “Let’s first have a restitution, each for each, then we can start to talk.

“Even if the goats were mine, lets share the goats on the basis of the truth, not to take mine then you say we have equal goats. So, we must work together fiction and deception will not work.”
