The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) says that the 2018 edition of the Harare International Carnival (HIC) is likely to rake in over $50 million into the economy owing to the recovery of the tourism sector.
Addressing the media Wednesday afternoon on the state of preparations ahead of the HIC which next month, ZTA chief executive officer, Karikoga Kaseke underscored that benefits derived from the event cascade to every sector of the economy.
“The previous two editions of the carnival raked in $30 million and $22 million respectively. This event has an economic impact and basing on the current economic recovery which has seen tourist arrivals increasing significantly, we project that more than $50 million will be injected into the economy through payments for accommodation and everything that will be consumed at the event,” he said.
He noted that such a figure is huge considering that sponsors inject investments in the ranges of around $ 1 million.
Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Priscah Mupfumira also noted that the country will be hosting the Afrima pre-awards ceremony on the sidelines of the event.
“The awards organisers selected the country to host the prestigious event basing on the realization that we are a peace loving and friendly country. We would like to count on such events to increase the number of tourist arrivals in the country,” she said.
ZTA also announced that NetOne will be the stop sponsor of this year’s edition of the Harare International Carnival in a development that will see the mobile services operating entity enjoying visibility while undertaking corporate social responsibility.
Dubbed the NetOne Harare International Carnival (HIC), the event is a unique brand that involves people across the social, cultural and political divide.
It creates an avenue to promote unity among Zimbabweans through celebrating our diversity, building bridges amongst our people and further strengthening our mutual relationships with friendly countries.
“Celebrating our Diversity” will therefore be the permanent branding pay-off line of the Carnival.
The Harare International Carnival is set to achieve high “Gross National Happiness” for the Zimbabwean people by 2020. The pursuit of happiness is collective.
