…Man kills girlfriend, attacks cousin, attempts suicide
A 30-year-old Beitbridge airtime vendor violently killed his girlfriend of 12 months with an okapi knife, before attempting to send his cousin to meet his maker, accusing him of dating his woman.
After attacking the two, Jortham Taruvinga also stabbed himself in the neck in a suicide attempt.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena said the incident occurred in the Milayo Industrial sites (formerly Industries) at around 11PM.
She said Taruvinga and his cousin Augustine Magigwana were still in critical condition at Beitbridge District Hospital.
In addition, Beitbridge resident magistrate Langton Mukwengi remanded Taruvinga in custody to 1 October from his hospital bed yesterday. He has since been charged with one count of murder and another of attempted murder.
The woman at the centre of the love triangle, Sithembiso Ncube (20) died from multiple stab wounds and investigations were in progress.
“Preliminary information we have so far, Taruvinga has been having an affair with the now deceased (Sithembiso Ncube) for over 12 months,” said Inspector Mangena.
“On Monday evening he went to collect her from Ha Mbedzi business centre in (Stauze Suburb) where she works. Along the way, he accused the woman of having an affair with his cousin Augustine Magigwana.
An argument then ensued between the two and the suspect then withdrew an Okapi knife and stabbed Ncube three times (on the neck and chest). She then disembarked from the car fleeing further attacks.
Taruvinga followed her and stabbed her twice on the chest, she died instantly and he drove away”.
The police spokesperson, said upon getting to his place of residence, Taruvinga confronted his cousin and stabbed him twice on the chest and fled.
Inspector Mangena said Magigwana was rushed to the hospital after a neighbor, who heard the fracas, called the property owner who then informed the police.
“After stabbing his cousin, the suspect went to his nephew at Kujo-coolers near Andy’s tavern and surrendered three cell phones and US$500 with instruction that they be given to his wife.
“He then stabbed himself on the neck in a suicide attempt but emergence workers took him to hospital, where he is in a critical condition,” she said.
The police spokesperson said Ncube’s body was discovered lying in a pool of blood some 400 meters away from the suspect’s lodgings and taken to the local mortuary.
Inspector Mangena added:
“We encourage that they involve third parties for counseling, these may be family members, pastor or the police-community relations and liaison officers,” she said.
