Zimbabwean opposition figure Tendai Biti has been deported back to Zimbabwe after being denied asylum in that country. Biti’s plight follows scenes of the military opening fire in the streets of Zimbabwe’s capital a week ago, killing six people, and growing opposition claims of harassment.

David Coltart revealed the deportation on twitter today in the morning.

Said Coltart, “It appears the Zambian Government is much the same as our own junta. Lawyer Gilbert Phiri has just advised that they defied the order of court & international law and it appears they have deported Biti. Police officers refused to accept the order which was then left at their door.”

Biti fled to Zambia from Zimbabwe on Wednesday morning in a bid to seek political asylum in the neighbouring state. However‚ Zambia has reportedly denied the veteran opposition political asylum‚ arguing that his grounds for asylum are weak‚ according to the BBC.

Zimbabwean authorities have been seeking to arrest Biti for allegedly inciting demonstrations that took place in central Harare last week.
