Alleged ‘shutdown’ mastermind appears in court
Heal Zimbabwe Trust Director and Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition Chairperson Rashid Mahiya appeared before Harare Magistrate Rumbidzayi Mugwagwa facing charges of subverting a constitutionally-elected government.
He is represented by Tonderai Bhatasara and was remanded in custody and instructed to apply for bail at the High Court.
Mahiya’s charges stem from allegations of being one of the architects of the orgy of violence that rocked the country leaving a trail of destruction as the chairperson of the grouping of civil society organisations.
About 1000 people were arrested in connection with charges of wanton destruction of property and looting during the MDC Alliance and civil society organisations-led protests.
Mahiya was on the police radar and believed to be in hiding before surrendering himself to the police on Monday.
