Six-hundred-and-ninety people have died on South African roads since the 1st of December.
Transport minister Fikile Mbalula said this was a 5.7 per cent decline when compared to the same time last year.
Ministers released preliminary festive season road safety stats on Tuesday.
Despite this, Mbalula says it is no reason to celebrate.
“One life lost, is one life too many,” he says.
Mbalula says law enforcement will continue to be visible along the country’s roads.
