3 000 inmates wave prison goodbye
At least 3 000 inmates under correctional services across the country have started waving goodbye to prison facilities after they were granted presidential clemency.
The move was meant to address decongestion of prisons in relation to health protocols induced by Covid-19 and also attend to food and clothing challenges faced by inmates.
According to a Clemency Order No.1 of 2021 proclaimed by President Mnangagwa, remission of sentences was given to all except those convicted of specified offences.
“The following prisoners are excluded from the amnesty-any prisoner who was previously released on amnesty, any prisoner serving a sentence imposed by a court martial.
“…any prisoner who has a record of escaping from lawful custody, any prisoner with a pending criminal appeal,” said Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officer commanding Harare Province, Senior Assistant Commissioner Alvord Gapare.
Specified offences include murder, rape, treason, carjacking, robbery, stock theft, public violence, human trafficking and unlawful possession of firearm.
Harare alone is set to release about 400 prisoners under the Presidential amnesty.
On Saturday, 320 prisoners including 11 female inmates, walked out free from Chikurubu Farm Prison.
At least 12 prisoners serving a life sentence each also benefited from the Presidential order.
