An amount of more than RTGs $200 000 was found in the car of a former Chivhu Police officer who was involved and killed in a head-on collision at the 76km peg along Masvingo Chivhu Road on.
Although it could not be fully established who the money really belonged to, the said vehicle belonged to Philip Mutsambi, a police formerly stationed at Chivhu but working in Guruve at the time of his death.
Masvingo mirror reports that the accident was caused by an overtaking error and Officer Mutsambi died together with a female passenger in his car.
Mash East police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the accident which killed two people.
It is reported that about $200 000 bond notes were recovered from Mutsambi’s car at the scene of the accident.
Mutsambi was driving towards Harare when he tried to overtake two vehicles.
Whilst he was overtaking, he saw an oncoming vehicle and tried to avoid a head-on collision by veering off to the right side of the road.
The oncoming motorist also veered off to his left side and the two motor vehicles had a head on collision.
Mutsambi and his passenger died on the spot.
Two other people who were injured were rushed to Chivhu General Hospital.
