200 ZINARA Toll Cashiers Fired
ZIMBABWE National Roads Administration (Zinara) this week wielded the ax on more than 200 tolling cashiers under unclear circumstances.
There have been reports of corruption within the top echelons of authority.
However, board chair Michael Madana is accused of nepotism in recruiting new staff.
“Madana recruited his relatives who are not qualified for the posts. He terminated the contracts of the tolling agents with no basis. He is been purging employees and he and Saston Muzenda are creating their small empire at Zinara,” a source told Zim Morning Post.
The company made headlines recently when reports suggested employees from the company rake in more money than teachers and doctors.
The basic salary obtained from a leaked offer letter shows an toll cashier earns ZWL 6240 and a transport allowance of ZWL660.
Zinara has a checkered past and was recently exposed in a forensic audit conducted by BDO auditors.
“The new team is untrained and there is bound to be loss of revenue as they need to acclaimaitise with the system. Its just sad that contract arbitrary terminated like that,” lamented a source.
Zim Morning Post reveal that Madana has been accused of abusing company funds to champion his political interests in Wedza.
He is also accused of using a proxy one Gilfern Moyo whom he handpicked from Zimpapers and imposed him as head of human resources and adminstration.
Efforts to get a comment from Madana hit a snag as his mobile phone went unanswered at the time of writing.
Zinara recently fired chief executive Nancy Masiyiwa-Chamisa after she reportedly crossed swords with former Transport minister Joram Gumbo, who stands accused of protecting a group of senior managers whose jobs were on the line for various offences.
Public Relations manager, veteran media practitioner Augustine Moyo voluntarily left the organisation last year, finance director Simon Taranhike also left in controversial circumstances.
The toxicity at the road adminstrator has reached alarming levels, with the deposed 200 tolling cashiers vowing to contest the termination of contracts in court arguing that there is no legal standing for such a move.
