Zimbabwe has 16 formal crossing points and 32 illegal crossing points along it borderline which stretches more than 2,000 kilometres a Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) official has revealed.

Speaking at a workshop on border control hosted by the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries on Thursday, Zimra compliance manager Robson Mukwena said that while the taxman has a presence on the country’s 16 formal crossing points, there are 32 illegal crossing points that have also been identified.

Mukwena said Zimra does not have the capacity to effectively deal with the porous borders that are being used as conduits to smuggle goods into the country because it only manages designated official points.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police’s border control unit also had no capacity to man the entire borderline due to lack of resources.
