More than 100 Snake Bite Cases Reported

The Ministry of Health in Zimbabwe has released a recent Disease Surveillance Report highlighting a decline in snake bite incidents for the week ending February 18, 2024. With 141 cases reported and no fatalities, there’s a noticeable improvement. However, the cumulative count of snake bites stands at 1,042 cases, with seven recorded deaths.

Despite this positive trend, the Ministry emphasizes the ongoing importance of public awareness regarding the risks associated with snake bites. In an advisory directed to the public, the Ministry urges individuals to take proactive steps to ensure their safety during outdoor activities.

While acknowledging the decrease in reported cases, the Ministry stresses the need for continued caution. It encourages outdoor enthusiasts to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures when venturing into areas where encounters with snakes are possible.

As part of their ongoing dedication to public health, the Ministry advocates the following precautions:

  1. Stay Informed: Educate yourself about the species of snakes present in your locality and their typical habitats.
  2. Wear Appropriate Clothing: When entering areas known for snake activity, consider donning protective attire, such as long pants and sturdy boots.
  3. Watch Your Step: Exercise caution and be mindful of your surroundings, particularly in tall grass, rocky terrain, or spots where snakes may lurk.
  4. Avoid Provoking Snakes: Maintain a safe distance if you come across a snake and refrain from attempting to handle or provoke it.
  5. Seek Immediate Medical Attention: In case of a snake bite, promptly seek medical aid. Refrain from trying to treat the bite yourself.
