Army, Police To Assist ZEC Despite Public Protest

AS the current political tension escalates, police have highlighted that the army might still be called upon to provide logistical support for the month-end polls.

‘ZIMBABWE NOW A MILITARY STATE’ SAYS MDC

Police’s elections committee commander Assistant Commissioner Erasmus Makodza informed journalists yesterday that the army would only provide transport in exceptional cases.

However, his statement diverged from Zec’s chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba, who on Monday declared that the military would have no role in the transportation of material for the upcoming elections.

Chigumba alleged that only the printers of ballot material would be responsible for the transportation of election material.

Makodza alluded that the police remained disturbed by rampant tearing down of candidates’ campaign posters, intimidation as well as the emergency of “no-go areas”.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said cases of inter- and intra-party violence had been minimal.
